Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) technique over 3000 years old. It involves the insertion of very fine sterile, disposable needles at specific points in the body to work with the Qi (Chinese term for energy or life force). This is usually painless and without side effects. Patients find the treatments deeply relaxing and nourishing. What is Qi (Chi)?
Qi is the most basic substance of which the world is comprised. Everything in the universe results from the movements and changes of Qi. It is the motive force in all living beings. Qi flows throughout the human body via acupuncture meridians or channels. An acupuncturist creates change in the body by gently inserting acupuncture needles into acupuncture points located along the meridians. These points are gateways to access the Qi in the body. Why Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine does not separate the human body into its individual parts. It is a holistic approach to health care understanding that all parts of the body are interrelated. If there is an excess in one area there will likely be a deficiency in another and vice versa. The aim of TCM is to balance the flow of Qi in the body. When a healthy balance of Qi is attained in a problem area, not only will it relieve discomfort in that particular area, but it will be reflected in other areas, as well. For this reason many patients find that not only does their main symptom get better, but their overall health improves, as well. Frequently patients report added “side benefits” of improved digestive function, better sleep and greater levels of energy. How does QI (Chi) become unbalanced or blocked?
Factors which can adversely affect the flow of Qi in the body include: Poor nutrition: overeating, eating too little, consuming excessive amounts of sugar and salt, too much meat and not enough vegetables; toxic air or water; physical inactivity; any injury; malfunction of an organ; infectious or contagious diseases; excessive exposure to environmental conditions: wind, damp, cold, heat, etc.; worry anxiety, stress or any emotion taken to extremes.
